Corporal punishment is an important issue which has been disputed by people for a long time. Until now, people still don’t reach a conclusion about it. Personally, I approve of corporal punishment. Although some experts claim that corporal punishment has bad influence on students, I believe that proper corporal punishment won’t hurt students but can help correct their behaviors.
Proper corporal punishment is not to hit or beat students when they make mistakes. Instead, teachers will use suitable ways to make students know that they are wrong, such as asking them to do more homework, jog for twenty minutes, or clean the classroom after class. This way, students can be punished without getting hurt. Nowadays, many people object to corporal punishment. They are afraid that teachers will punish students in a harmful way. Besides, after being reprimanded by teachers, students may feel ashamed before their classmates, and it will influence their personalities. However, I think they are all stereotypes. Take me for example. I
was once punished by my teacher because I ate cookies in the class. At that time, the teacher didn’t scold me in public. She asked me after class not to do it anymore, and punished me to clean the classroom. In that way, I didn’t get physical punishment but I understood my fault and corrected it. Therefore, corporal punishment does not always hurt students.
Corporal punishment is a good way to prevent students from behaving badly. If students make mistakes but no one punishes them, they will not think they do something wrong. By getting corporal punishment, it is easy for them to understand their fault and correct it. They will remember the experience of being punished and try not to make the same mistakes again. Besides, they can also have moral concepts. However, some people do not support this practice. They think it is not useful to teach students by punishing them. Instead, teachers should teach students by “telling” them how to improve it. It seems like a good way to teach students.
However, hey forget that some students don’t respect teachers. If they make mistakes and teachers just tell them they are wrong without any punishment, they do not really care about it. Only if they get corporal punishment will they try to correct their behaviors. Therefore, I think students who respect teachers can be taught without any corporal punishment, but the bad students should be taught by some proper punishment.
Moreover, corporal punishment is a very fast way to make students behave well. In Taiwan, there are almost forty students in a class. If one of the students is noisy and keeps talking during the class, it will disturb the other students. By punishing the student immediately, it can make him be quiet in a short time and do not influence the other students. For instance, my junior high school classmate, Tom, was very rude. During the class, He often kept saying something impolite to my classmates and teachers. As soon as he started to annoy the other classmates, theteacher always asked him to be quiet right away. However, it was not useful to make him behave well. As a result, the teacher had to punish him to stand in the back of the classroom so that he would not interrupt the others. Maybe some people insist that teachers should teach students with patient and love, but when my teacher taught Tom step by step, he would not behave himself instantly and the other students could not concentrate on the class. So I believe that corporal punishment can teach students in a fast way and also make the other good students be educated
without any disturbance.
To sum up, I think proper corporal punishment has three merits: to teach students without hurting them, to teach them effectively, and to correct their behaviors fast. By getting proper corporal punishment, students will not get hurt. Instead, it can push them to do well and learn faster than before.
