Success

When people mention “success”, what will you think of? Some people consider wealth as a symbol of success because rich people can get what they want by money. However, some people think powerful people are successful because they can influence the policy and economy easily. Also, there are still some people who believe that being famous means success because it is a honor to be known all over the world. But I have different opinions from them. For me, success is that people are satisfied with their lives and reach their goals after trying hard.

Success is not related to the minds. Nowadays, people are eager to pursue money and power. They think if they have money and power, they can control things as they want. For them, to own things as much as they can is successful. However, they forget the feeling of happiness and the sense of achievement. I think success does not depend on how much people get but how happy they are. Although some people are not rich and powerful, they still lead successful lives. Why? Because they are contented with everything they have. They do what they want and enjoy it, and that is success.

I have heard a story about a poor old man, who is nearly seventy, and he doesn’t have any families to live with. As a result, he has to make money by washing dishes every day. Although he is not rich, he still tries to help the poor. He says that he believes some people need help more than he, so he wants to raise money for them. After knowing the story, I think he is a successful person. In some people’s views, he is poor and in a low status. He doesn’t have anything beautiful houses, expensive cars and any families to take care of him. However, he loves his life. He treasures it and feels satisfied with it. Most importantly, he does what he wants-- to help others, so he is a successful man for me.

Moreover, success also means people reach their goals after trying hard.If people can finish their works and be proud of them, it means “success.” Take me for example. I had a feeling of success when I was seventeen. At that time, we joined an English drama competition and everyone in my class should do her own work. I was responsible for making the properties and my best friend was the leader of the group. Therefore, both of us had to do most of the works. At first, we all thought it was easy; however, we had some difficulties as time went by. For instance, some of my group members never showed up and it made us spend more time doing the properties. In the end, we met a big problem. Because the properties were too heavy to stand on the stage, we had to find out a way to hold them. Finally, we solved the problem by sticking some paperboards on the properties. When I finished the works, I felt proud of myself. I spent a lot of time finishing my works and tried so hard to conquer many problems. For me, it was “success.”

I have read a book which explains the meaning of success. It says that “success is to do what you want and to be what you dream to be.” I totally agree with it because people can seldom do what they like, not to mention becoming what they dream to be. Therefore, if people can do that and enjoy their lives, it is easy to get the feeling of success.
